Recently, major hotels such as Marriott International, Hilton, and The Four Seasons are now offering vacation rentals. This major expansion is largely due to the fact that competitors like Airbnb have changed the playing field by providing people with their choice of shared rental spaces.

Over the summer, Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts launched their own rental option; Four Seasons Private Retreats. The company has over 750 rental villas and residences with locations all around the world. Guests can enjoy the privacy of what feels like home, while experiencing all of the amenities that staying at a Four Seasons Hotel has to offer. This is a unique and creative way to combat the competition of airbnbs. Guest will have all of the comforts of home while being able to access services that Airbnb’s do not offer at this time. The hotel’s rental residences still include restaurants, bars, gyms, spas, and much more.

Whether people are traveling with friends, family, or gathering together for a wedding, there are a plethora of accommodations to choose from. Private retreats offer services such as executive chefs to prepare a dinner party and private yoga lessons in the home’s courtyard. There is something for everyone. No longer do you have to decide between renting a beach house and doing all of the cooking and cleaning yourself or staying at a hotel with full service while losing the feeling of exclusivity.

Furthermore, Four Seasons has no third-party association. The company serves as the property manager with their own teams to service everything. In the vacation rental industry, Private Retreats definitely stands apart from the rest

In the past there have been those that dismissed Airbnb as a competitor, however, denying the growing popularity of the app cannot continue. Marriott International, the world’s largest hotel operation is following suit. The company has just launched their own home rental platform similar to the Four Seasons. 

Airbnb offers something for two groups of people: those looking to get away and those wishing to make a little extra money. Their success has been partly at the expense of hotel companies, as they are often favored by large families and young travelers. 

There is, however, one area that the hotels have a lead in when it comes to home rentals. Not only do they offer services that airbnb doesn’t, but they already have protections in the same laws that has been becoming more critical of Airbnb’s business. 

The startup has recently faced issues in New York City, when last year a law was passed requiring the company to  disclose more detailed listing information. City governments across the United States have long been scrutinizing Airbnb, citing citizens turning their homes into hotels as illegal. 

While hotel companies like Marriott and Four Seasons will also have to abide by local restrictions, the opportunity for growth in this market is far too big for them to pass up. One thing is certain, it will be thrilling to see what else these major companies have in store.
